    Office Furniture A-Z

    Office Furniture A-Z

Office FurnitureGet to know your business or industry with an A-Z Guide.

Whatever industry you work in, you will probably find that compiling an A-Z guide helps you to focus on your business and understand it more fully. It’s a useful exercise because you have to really think hard about your core business to find a relative term for each letter of the alphabet.

For some letters, a related product or service will be instantly apparent, but for others you need to dig much deeper. Admittedly some of the letter associations below are tenuous at best but this is all part of the fun!

Try it yourself. It could keep you occupied for hours, particularly if you spend long periods in your car or find yourself bored at work for instance.

A – Artifical Plants. No office is complete without a selection of realistic artificial plants to create a relaxed and calm environment. Although real plants are preferable, nobody really wants to have to constantly water and maintain them do they?

B - BT Office Furniture (of course!). Also Bar Stools. Yes we stock bar stools too! (Think office canteens, staff rooms, bistros and cafes as well as the obvious)

C - Cheap Office Furniture (can I get away with that?)

D - Discount Office Furniture (that’s pushing it too!)

E - Ergonomic Office Chair. A chair that has been specifically designed for comfort and support, especially for the back and neck.

F - Flat Pack. This is something we definitely DON’T do! Our prices include free delivery, assembly and installation throughout most of the UK

G - Glass Desks. Although more expensive than their wood cousins, glass desks look ultra-chic and modern and help offices exude class and quality.

H - Herman Miller. The great office furniture designer and creator of the Action office system (1968), the worlds first open-plan modular system of panels (think office cubicles!)

I - iPad (3?). OK not strictly office furniture, but every office worker should have access to one of these regardless of business type or industry. It’s a beautifully designed and high-spec device (I am not in away affiliated to or associated with Apple by the way – I just love the iPad and I’ve never met anybody who doesn’t).

J - Jack and Jill Tub Chairs. Phew! I struggled with this one, but it serves to prove the usefulness of this exercise because I had to thoroughly research our products until I found these. I wasn’t even aware we supplied them.

K - Kassini range of office desks by Elite.

L - Lumbar Support. This is a curved area of an ergonomically designed office chair that helps to support your lower spine. It can usually be adjusted to suit your body shape.

M - Metal Storage. The bisley metal storage range includes filing cabinets, drawers, shelving, cupboards, lockers, and inner space storage units on wheels.

N - Nomi Stacking Chair. Available with or without arms.

O - This should be easy! Office Furniture, Office Desks, Office Chairs, Office Tables, Office Storage, Office Screens

P - Partitions. Office partitioning can be used to create a room within a room or to divide up open areas into independent units. These could include meeting rooms, individual offices or even a staff kitchen.

Q - Qudos range. The Imperial Qudos range of executive office desks incorporates a cantilever system and comes in a huge variety of different finishes.

R - Radial Desks. This type of office desk can usually be combined with other radial desks to create a larger working area and to seat more employees where space may be limited.

S - Seat Height Adjustment / Seat Depth Adjustment. These are standard features on most office chairs, in particular ergonomic chairs.

T - Theatre Seating or Theatre Furniture. Yes believe it or not, although we are an office furniture company, we also supply furniture for theatres.

U - UKs leading Office Furniture Supplier. Who could it be? BT Office of course (sorry, I couldn’t think of anything better beginning with ‘U’)

V - Vital range of bench desks.

W - Waterloo Road (BBC 1). BT Office Group is proud to supply this series based in a comprehensive school with their furniture.

X - Xecutive leather chair…can I get away with that? OK perhaps not.

Y - YouTube. Yes we have a YouTube channel featuring some fantastic office furniture renders created by our resident 3D modeller and our promotional video. Find us at youtube.com/btofficefurniture

Z - zzz (sleeping in your office chair while your boss is out on a business meeting J )

    Office Furniture Guide

    Office Furniture Guide

Office FurnitureCustomer: “I’d like to buy an office chair please. Can you give me some advice?”

Office Furniture Adviser: “Certainly madam, I recommend an ergonomic office chair with lumbar support, a hinged-front and telescopic hand-wheel seat slide adjustment!”

    Customer: “Er…pardon?!”

Don’t get caught out with sales jargon, here is a handy office furniture guide in the form of a glossary to help you understand the most common office furniture terms.

    Office Furniture Glossary

    Ergonomic

An ergonomic office chair is one that has been specifically designed to fit the shape of the human body, and offers support and comfort for the user, even when sitting for prolonged periods.

    Lumbar Support

Lumbar relates to the lower region of the back and is sometimes referred to as the lower spine. A lumbar support is a curved area of an office chair that supports your lower back.

    Air Lumbar Pump

This allows you to adjust the tension of support in your lower spine by simply squeezing or pressing a lever

    Arm Rest Articulation

In addition to height adjustable arms and side-to-side angle adjustment, some office chairs allow you to tilt the arm rests forwards or backwards to suit your particular requirements.

    Backrest Depth Adjuster

Sometimes referred to as Seat Slide Adjustment this function allows you to move your seat away from or closer to the back support using a sliding mechanism.

    Pedestal

A pedestal is a storage unit that can be placed either adjacent to your office desk or underneath it. There are 3 types: fixed, mobile and desk-height. The mobile desk pedestals are usually fitted with casters.

    Cantilever Chair

    Cantilever Chair

    Cantilever

The office chair or office desk is a beam that is only anchored at one end. (see picture right)

    Casters / Castors

Gliding wheels attached to the bottom of the office chair.

    Tilt Adjustment

Seat tilt adjustment kind of does what it says on the tin. It allows you to tilt your seat forwards or backwards. Tilting your seat forwards relieves the pressure on the back of your legs and is standard on ergonomic office chairs.

    Swivel / Self-Returning Swivel

A swivel base allows you to spin your office chair around, usually 360 degrees. A self-return swivel automatically spins the chair back to its original position and is often found as a feature on tub chairs.

    5-Star Base

This relates to the base of an office chair. A 5-star base is usually fitted with casters.

    Cable Management System

A cable management system is a way of concealing and tidying up your office cabling. Cable management can be built into office desks, for instance inside the table legs.

    Popup Power & Data

A popup power and/or data system can be fitted to an office desk so that it is made available when required simply by pulling it up. It allows users to share a power or data source.

    MFC

Melamine Faced Chipboard. Economy wood material used for office desks and shelving.

    Wood Veneer

A cheaper alternative to solid wood. It is a thin layer of real wood fixed on top of a cheaper wooden surface. It is often used for office shelving and desks.

There are of course other office furniture terms, specifically relating to ergonomic office chairs such as ‘Height Adjustable Backrest’ which I have deliberately omitted because they are self-explanatory.

If you have any other questions related to office furniture, please use the comments form below and I will add them to this glossary.

    UK Office Furniture

    Buy Office Furniture

Office FurnitureThere are many different reasons why you might want to buy office furniture and you may recognise yourself in one of the following scenarios:

    • You have been tasked by your boss to refurnish your office
    • You’re a business owner and are moving office
    • You hate your tired old-fashioned office furniture and want to replace it with something more modern and contemporary
    • You are relocating to new business premises
    • You are starting a new business and want to buy office furniture for the first time

Choosing office furniture and designing your new space is not always as straight forward as it seems and here are two very different options available to you:

    Buy cheap office furniture online

FragilePerform a search on Google and and place an order with any site that appears near the top of the first page.

    Pros

You’ve found some really cheap office furniture and feel pleased with yourself on what a wonderful deal you’ve found and how much money you’ve saved yourself and your company.

You brag to your colleagues and tell your partner when you get back home.

    Cons

Your office furniture arrives flat-packed and has clearly been mis-handled by the courier.

The driver has no association with the company you purchased from, other than as a logistical parner. He claims the damage is not his problem and refuses to help you move the furniture into your office, citing health and safety nonsense.

Your partner leaves you and you get fired.

    Great!

Office Furniture – Delivered, Assembled & Installed

Office Furniture InstallationThe alternative is to take your time and perform a little research using our old friend Google and choose a company that will offer you friendly advice at each stage of your office planning.

HINT: search for bt office furniture :)

    Pros

A 2D and 3D space planning service which includes bespoke furniture design if required. This will help you to visualise your new office and optimise the available space for maximum productivity and ergonomic comfort.

Your discount office furniture will generally include delivery, assembly and installation throughout most of the UK.

Over 47 years combined experience within the office furniture industry.

A verifiable track record of excellent customer feedback collated since 1994.

    Cons

Hmmm…erm none that spring to mind!

    Can you think of any?

There are very few companies that can compete on price and provide you with this level of service.

OK I admit that this is a little bit of self-promotion for which I apologise, but we genuinely want to make sure that your experience buying office furniture is one that you will enjoy.

After all, we all know that good service is quickly forgotten, but poor service is remembered and passed on to friends, family and even social networks (not good news from a viral perspective!)

“Thanks guys, you delivered on time, just as promised, and the items I ordered were ideal for my needs. You will be my first choice should I need anything similar in the future, Excellent, friendly service. 10 out of 10.”

    4Com Office Furniture Installation

    Office Furniture Installation for 4Com

BT Office FurnitureWe recently supplied office furniture to accommodate 180 staff at 4Com and it’s a refit that we’re incredibly proud of.

The office furniture installation for a job on this scale required all of our specialist installation team working flat out over a 5-day period!

One of the most pleasing aspects of this office furniture installation was that the Meeting Rooms had tables that were Imperial iBench ’Specials’ and the Management Suite had ‘Special Radial Desks’ and ‘Special Conference Extensions’.

These items were designed by Nigel Curtis and Derek Flood from BT Office Furniture. Imperial the office furniture manufacturers then proceeded to make them as ‘Specials’ and were so impressed with the designs that the Meeting Tables have subsequently appeared in their Price List!

Never shy of a challenge, Nigel & Derek can be relied upon to fit office furniture into practically any office space – even if it has to be designed from scratch and custom built.

The only major problem we encountered with this refit was provided for us by the good old British weather.

4Com were due to have their Grand Opening and relocation party on 22nd December starting at 4:00pm. The custom made Reception Counter was delayed on its journey from Italy and arrived on site on the 22nd at 10:00am. Our installers left at 2:30pm!! There’s nothing like a deadline to keep you on your toes.

Where possible, we always like to use our own installers who deliver, assemble and install on site. This helps to ensure that the office furniture installation is achieved quickly, efficiently and reducing the risk of damage to the furniture.

As illustrated by the following images we also installed their Canteen and Reception Furniture, thus creating a wonderfully relaxing and aesthetically pleasing environment for 4Com’s employees.

The ‘Before & After’ gallery below clearly demonstrates the scope of work involved in a major office refit.

    Leather Office Furniture Care Guide

    Leather Care Guide

Leather Office ChairsWe are often asked by our customers for advice on how to protect, preserve and clean leather office furniture, in particular our executive leather office chairs.

For this reason, we’ve compiled this handy leather care guide to help you properly look after your leather office furniture. This will help to prevent damage from improper use of cleaning products and help to prolong the life of your product.

    Leather Cleaning Guide

You may need the following depending on the result you are trying to achieve:

    1. Cleaning cloths (specialised E-cloth microfibre furniture cleaning cloths can be used on leather)
    2. Distilled water
    3. Isopropyl alcohol (also known as Rubbing Alcohol) & cotton wool (for removing ink stains from leather). Rubbing alcohol can also be used for removing mildew and mold from leather.
    4. Talcum powder or cornstarch (for removing oil or grease stains from leather)
    5. Chamois cloths, white wine vinegar, linseed oil (for nourishing and preserving leather products). Vinegar can also be used for removing salt stains from leather.
    6. Ice – for removing gum from leather

How To Nourish & Protect Your Leather Office Furniture

Mix together some white wine vinegar and linseed oil in a ratio of 1:2 (1 part vinegar to 2 parts oil). Using a chamois cloth, rub the leather using circular movements for at least 15 minutes. Once you have covered the entire surface, remove any excess liquid using another dry chamois cloth. Allow to dry naturally.

How To Remove Mold & Mildew From Leather

Mix together some rubbing alcohol & water in equal quantities. Apply to the leather surface using a damp cloth and then allow to dry naturally away from direct sunlight.

How To Remove Oil & Grease Stains From Your Leather Furniture

N.B Do NOT use water on its own as this could cause the stain to spread.

Blot up any excess oil or grease using tissue or absorbent cloth. Next cover the stain with either cornstarch or talcum powder and allow to sit overnight. The powder helps to absorb the grease or oil and you should find that using a soft, dry cloth the following day will help to remove the stain.

How To Remove Ink Stains From Leather

Carefully treat the ink stain using Isopropyl alcohol and a cotton wool ball or swab. Leave the rubbing alcohol to work into the stain for 15-20 minutes. Dry the area with a clean cloth.

N.B It is advisable to spot test a small, inconspicuous area before treating large ink stains.

How To Remove Gum From Leather

To remove sticky gum from leather you simply need to apply some ice until the gum hardens. Then carefully peel away the gum, ensuring you don’t scratch the leather beneath if using a sharp object.

How To Remove Salt Stains From Leather

This final tip probably applies more to leather clothing than furniture. However,  if for some reason you end up with salt stains on your leather office furniture, this is how to remove them. Mix a solution of vinegar to water in the ratio of 3:1 (3 parts vinegar and 1 part water). Using some cotton wool, gently wipe away the stains and allow to dry naturally.

Leather conditioner, specialist leather care kits, and leather wipes are also widely available from supermarkets and DIY stores.

Please CLICK HERE if you would like to download this guide as a PDF file and feel free to distribute and share accordingly.
